Bukola Bakinson wrote her first screenplay called ‘Silver’ in 2009, and her second called ‘Don’t Judge Me’ in 2011, both productions were showcased at Soho Theatre. She then went on to produce a feature film that she wrote and directed called ‘Heads or Tails’, which was screened at the Brixton Ritzy in 2015, and a short film called ‘Where is my Joy’ which was selected to screen at the British Urban Film Festival (BUFF), also in 2015. On the side, Bukola began a research looking into language and communication in the criminal justice system

These ventures in film encouraged Bukola to set up Becoming Productions, inspired by Aristotle’s definition of becoming, being ‘any change involving realisation of potentialities, as a movement from the lower level of potentiality to the higher level of actuality’.

In 2016 Bukola was a Production Assistant on a short film produced by Listeners Project, and in 2017 she took on an opportunity to join a Writer’s Room as Script Editor Assistant on the first season of ‘Bulletproof’ commissioned by Sky One. Bukola then went on to begin a degree in Film and Media at Birkbeck University in 2018 and later transferred to University of Greenwich for her final year in 2020/21. For her final year film project, Bukola used the research into the criminal justice system to develop a documentary film called ‘No Comprendo’, which she directed and presented. ‘No Comprendo’ was selected for 2 international film festivals, 2 national film festivals, 2 honourable mentions and it won RTS Student Award for Best Documentary in 2022.

With a background in youth work, poetry and spoken word, Bukola was drawn to narrative in film and how much change can be influenced through documentary films. Her love for working in the community came side-by-side with her love for writing and filmmaking, and seems to be leading in the direction of investigative journalism.
